Meet Dr Priya, Anesthesia Resident

"The interest for anesthesiology sparked during my internship when I would see this one person calmly doing their role amidst the chaos of the operating room. Not only do anesthesiologists just sedate people, they also intubate people, provide critical care and are heavily involved with pain management and analgesia. They ensure that the patient has an unhindered and less painful recovery."

“I closed my eyes for a couple of minutes at 5 am and all I could hear was the beeping of ventilators and a small voice of an old patient suffering from COVID asking me to get her a glass of water. I did. “Try your best to save my life, but if you don’t find me here at your next shift- know that you did all you could,” as soon as she said that I knew what my purpose was. Sadly, I never saw her again.

I started my MBBS journey in 2013, I graduated medical school took a break year to prepare for my post-graduation entrance. I could never see myself being anything but a doctor, and I truly believe my knowledge is my superpower. The happiest days of my life definitely have to be the ones when I was bestowed the title of a Dr. and the day I got into my anesthesia program. But of course, it has been full of challenges especially taking a gap year to prepare for an entrance test and the social pressure that comes with being unemployed as a qualified doctor.

The interest for anesthesiology sparked during my internship when I would see this one person calmly doing their role amidst the chaos of the operating room. Not only do anesthesiologists just sedate people, they also intubate people, provide critical care and are heavily involved with pain management and analgesia. They ensure that the patient has an unhindered and less painful recovery.

To all the aspiring doctors out there, my little piece of advice will be that non-medical professionals will never understand the lifestyle of a medical professional, so if you’re scared of seeing the hard work and the long hours and years from the outside let me burst your bubble – it is truly not like that, it is one of the best professions to have and very fulfilling. And most importantly you are bestowed with a title and respect that nothing can take away from you, even in death you will always be referred to as a DR. and that’s very powerful"
